My journey to the Jaipong dance art studio in Subang

After I went eel hunting with Mr. Yayan, I went back home and chatted with some local residents, accompanied by him.
From our conversation, I got some information about an art school  a Jaipong dance studio located in the Pagaden area of Subang. It is a traditional cultural dance studio that represents the heritage of the Subang community.

There, I was able to witness the training firsthand something rarely known or published. I was amazed to see how many young women were interested in learning Jaipong dance. It truly reflects cultural empowerment that has been nurtured from an early age.

The studio has several levels or classes, from level 1 to level 3.
Here is the detailed explanation:

  1. For girls aged 5 to 10 years old:
The training focuses on developing body flexibility and basic movement.

  2. For girls aged 11 to 16 years old:
They learn coordinated body movements, including the art of graceful hip and head motion.

  3. For girls aged 17 years and above:
They master full body coordination, flexibility, and the refined art of synchronized body and hip movement, preparing them for stage performances.

At first glance, it seemed easy  but when I tried to dance myself, it turned out to be incredibly difficult! I was even laughed at by the locals, especially the women there.

In the end, I could only watch and document a small part of the Jaipong dance training  a truly unique and beautiful tradition of Subang.
